Allergic Contact Dermatitis due to Befunolol Hydrochloride in 0.5% Bentos Eyedrops

Abstract
Befunolol hydrochloride is a ¥â-adrenergic receptor antagonist commonly used topically in treatment of glaucoma because of a satisfactory intracouclar pressure lowering capacity without relevant relevant topical or systemic side effects.
We report herein a case of allergic contact dermatitis due to befunolol hydrochloride in 0.5% Bentos eyedrops. A 52-year-old Korean woman had suffered from erythema and edema with itching sensation on her left eye since November 18, 1992. The has
used
various ophthalmic preparations including Bentos eyedrops containing befunolol hydrochloride 0.5% as its active constituent since October, 1992 for treatment of glaucoma of her left eye since November 18, 1992. She had used various ophthalmic
preparations including Bentos eyedropsy containing befunolol hydrochloride 0.5% as its active constituent since October, 1992 for treatment of glaucoma of her left eye.
Patch test with the European standard series, rubber series, the patient's eyedropsy and their individual constituents showed positive reactions only to 0.5% Bentos eyedrops(as is) and to befunolol hydrochloride. We noted rapid improvement of
skin
lesions and symptoms after the withdrawal of Bentos eyedrops and application of another ¥â-blocker(carteolol hydrochloride). (Kor J Dermatol 1994 ; 32(6) : 1142~1146)
